Sigiriya

Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is also known as the Lion Rock because of the huge lion statue that used to stand at the entrance of the fortress.

The Sigiriya rock fortress is believed to have been built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD as a royal palace and fortress. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning in the world.

The fortress is located on a massive rock that rises 200 meters above the surrounding plain. It is surrounded by a moat, ramparts, and gardens that are believed to have been part of an elaborate water garden complex. The fortress complex includes a palace, a throne room, a barracks, and several other structures. The walls of the palace and the throne room are adorned with colorful frescoes, some of which are still visible today.

Dambulla

The Dambulla Rock Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the central province of Sri Lanka. It is one of the largest cave temple complexes in Sri Lanka and is considered one of the most well-preserved examples of ancient cave temple architecture in the world.

The Dambulla Rock Cave Temple consists of five caves, each of which is filled with Buddhist murals, statues, and other religious artifacts. The caves date back to the 1st century BC, when King Valagamba took refuge in them during his exile from Anuradhapura. Over the centuries, the caves were expanded and improved upon by successive kings, resulting in the elaborate temple complex that we see today.

The most impressive cave at the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple is Cave 2, also known as the Maharaja Vihara or the Great Temple. This cave is 52 meters long and 23 meters wide and contains more than 150 Buddha statues, including a 14-meter-long reclining Buddha statue.

The other caves at the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple contain a variety of religious artwork, including murals depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha, as well as statues of other important figures in Buddhist mythology. Visitors to the temple can also explore the surrounding area, which includes a museum, a meditation center, and a range of other religious and cultural sites.

9 Arch Bridge

The Nine Arch Bridge, also known as the Bridge in the Sky, is a famous bridge located near the town of Ella in Sri Lanka's Central Highlands. The bridge was built during the British colonial era and is considered a marvel of engineering, with its nine arches perfectly blending in with the surrounding landscape.

The Nine Arch Bridge spans a deep ravine between two hills, surrounded by lush green tea plantations and jungle. It is constructed entirely of bricks, stones, and cement, without any steel reinforcement, making it a unique example of early 20th-century railway construction.

The bridge is still in use today, and visitors can watch as trains pass over it, providing a dramatic backdrop for photographs and videos. The best time to visit the bridge is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is soft, and the crowds are smaller.

Visitors can reach the Nine Arch Bridge by taking a short hike from Ella town, passing through tea plantations and small villages. Alternatively, visitors can also take a train from Ella to Demodara Station, located near the bridge, and walk the remaining distance.

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is an ancient city located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. It was the capital of Sri Lanka from the 4th century BCE until the 11th century CE, and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular destination for tourists interested in Sri Lankan history and culture.

Anuradhapura is home to a number of impressive ruins and monuments, including ancient temples, palaces, and stupas. The most famous of these is the Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree that is believed to have grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. The tree is surrounded by a fence and is one of the most sacred places in Sri Lanka.

Another important site in Anuradhapura is the Ruwanwelisaya, a large stupa that is considered one of the most important Buddhist monuments in Sri Lanka. It was built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BCE and is still in use today as a place of worship and pilgrimage.

Other notable sites in Anuradhapura include the Abhayagiri Monastery, an important center of Buddhist learning in ancient times, and the Jetavanaramaya, another massive stupa that is one of the tallest structures in the ancient world.
